Classroom Use Policies

Office of the University Registrar (UREG) Classroom Policies

General Information

The classroom policy, as defined in June 1995, by the Executive Vice President and Chief Operational Officer Leonard W. Sandridge and Vice President and Provost Peter Low states that all scheduling of academic space at the University will be done by a central scheduling office, and that the office will be the Office of the University Registrar. This ensures that all usage is recorded on the central data system for reporting purposes and that customers have a single contact for making room reservations.

The Associate Provost for Academic Support has the ultimate responsibility for coordinating, monitoring, refining, and implementing classroom policy. Also mandated is the need for increasing classroom utilization rates throughout the University during the hours from 8:00 PM to 10:00 PM Monday through Thursday and 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM on Friday.

Providing technological equipment in classrooms at the University requires additional steps for reserving such rooms. This procedure applies to all technology enhanced classrooms that are supported by ITS.

For information about particular classrooms, please see our classroom list.

Food

Catered food may not be served or consumed in classrooms.

Only incidental food (for example, coffee, pastries, cupcakes, fruit) brought individually by faculty or students, or food carried by individuals for individual consumption, is allowed in classrooms.

Events for which the main academic activities are scheduled in classroom spaces, and which intend to serve catered food including morning coffee service, must plan in advance to use nearby departmental or school-controlled space such as conference rooms or reception areas for food service and consumption. Participants may bring remaining beverages back to classrooms. Please do not leave food trash in containers or receptacles inside of classrooms.  Classrooms should be left as found at the beginning of your class or event.

Furniture and Equipment

If the furniture in a classroom which you have reserved does not meet your needs, please contact [email protected] to REQUEST another room with an appropriate configuration. For the needs of a class or event that may follow your reservation, our state reporting requirements, and for various fire code requirements, DO NOT remove furniture from any classroom or class lab. For departmental class labs, please consult with a department administrator for changes.

DO NOT:

  • MOVE THE PODIUM or EQUIPMENT CABINET
  • RECONFIGURE THE EQUIPMENT on the podium
  • DISCONNECT ANY CABLES or ADD CABLES to the system

Doing so may result in charges for damages and loss of classroom reservation privileges for at least one full semester.
